I have spent an unreasonable amount of time changing time zones lately.

And—I have some updated opinions about jet lag.

One of the biggest is this: the first day deserves more thought than most people give it.

Save the best experience for Day Two. After an overnight flight, that private guide, special lunch or all-day excursion is far more enjoyable after a good night’s sleep. Keep arrival day flexible. I like to explore the neighborhood at a relaxed pace, have a good lunch, take a walk or maybe book a spa treatment—enough to enjoy being somewhere new without committing to a schedule when I’m tired.

And if you have a jet lag trick that actually works, tell me. I’m always willing to borrow a good idea.

Sometimes It’s Worth Booking the Hotel the Night Before

A flight that arrives hours before hotel check-in can turn a perfectly good first day into a long wait. Most of the time, I try to avoid that problem when choosing flights in the first place.

When that isn’t possible, I look at the options: guaranteed early access, a later-arriving flight or, on certain trips, booking the room the night before so you can go straight to your room.

That may sound extravagant until you arrive tired, want a shower, and realize that “early check-in requested” is not the same thing as having a room ready.

Years of long-distance travel have made me much more particular about details like this, both for my own trips and when I’m planning for clients.
