If you’ve looked at international airfares lately, you already know the reality: travel now requires a bit more strategy than it used to.

And honestly? Sometimes the most satisfying trips are the ones that don’t involve a ten-hour flight, brutal jet lag, or two days of recovery time once you get home.

Having just returned from French Canada, I’ve been thinking a lot about destinations that deliver genuine character, cultural depth, and a real sense of place — without the long-haul exhaustion.

These aren’t compromises.

They’re simply different kinds of escapes.

Croissants, Cobblestones, and French Canada

Quebec City feels remarkably European in the best possible way — stone alleyways, café terraces, centuries-old architecture, and French woven naturally into daily life.

And unlike many European capitals right now, it still offers breathing room.

For hotels, consider the iconic Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, which anchors the skyline above the St. Lawrence River, the beautifully positioned Auberge Saint-Antoine in Petit-Champlain, or Monsieur Jean, an elegant SLH property in the heart of the fortified old city.

Three things I’d do immediately in Quebec City:

1. Wander Petit-Champlain early in the morning before the cafés fill up.
2. Book a riverside table overlooking the St. Lawrence for a long lunch or sunset dinner.
3. Spend an afternoon e-biking through Île d’Orléans, stopping at vineyards, farm stands, waterfalls, and quiet lookout points over the river.

It’s the kind of destination that feels layered, atmospheric, and incredibly easy to enjoy.

A Foodie Dream, World-Class Design, and Mezcal

If your idea of travel leans more toward design, food, and energy, Mexico City continues to impress me more every time I visit.

Specifically, the Polanquito and Roma Norte neighborhoods — leafy, walkable, and packed with exceptional restaurants, galleries, and some of the best boutique hotels in North America.

One standout for me remains Las Alcobas, designed by Yabu Pushelberg. It feels intimate and residential rather than overly polished or corporate, with one of those lobbies you actually want to linger in.

This is a city best experienced slowly: Late dinners, long breakfasts, neighborhood wandering, and museum afternoons broken up by mezcal tastings. Try Brujas in Roma Norte.

The Return of the Train

One of the most interesting shifts I’m seeing right now is how many luxury travelers are rethinking short regional flights in favor of rail.

And honestly, I understand the appeal.

The moment the journey moves from airport security lines to panoramic train windows, the entire pace changes.

Whether it’s a glass-domed Rocky Mountaineer route through the Canadian Rockies or a design-forward rail itinerary closer to home, the luxury becomes the experience itself:
watching the landscape unfold slowly with a great glass of wine in hand.
