In my last note, I shared the idea of the “Pivot” — shifting just beyond the obvious cities to find the places that still feel authentic, layered, and a bit more breathable.

But there’s another layer to that strategy that matters just as much.

If the Pivot is about where you go, this is about how you experience it once you’re there.

I was reminded of that very quickly in Amsterdam.

Over the course of three days, I stepped on and off 16 different river ships. Many were sailing similar routes — Amsterdam to Budapest, the Rhine, the Danube.

On paper, they looked nearly identical.

In reality, they felt completely different.

With my background in design, I notice these things immediately.

Because the truth is — environment dictates energy.

Some ships felt structured, traditional, even a bit confined.

Others felt open, calm, and quietly refined — the kind of spaces where you actually want to linger at the end of the day with a glass of wine.

That difference isn’t about amenities.

It’s about how the experience is designed.

A few things became very clear ~

Space is the real luxury

Not more features — fewer guests, more room to breathe, and a sense of ease throughout the ship.

Design should feel residential, not commercial

The best ships feel thoughtfully designed and quietly elegant — never under- or overdone, never trying too hard.

Consistency matters more than flash

When everything flows naturally — from layout to service — the entire journey feels effortless.

The Paris of North America

It’s the same principle we talked about with the “Pivot” — once you start looking beyond the obvious, the experience changes entirely.

Montreal has long been called the “Paris of North America”—not just for its architecture, but for its rhythm, culture, and sense of place.

In May, I’ll be heading there with John for a one-week scouting trip, exploring whether these “New World” cities can offer that same depth and character we’re all craving—without crossing the Atlantic.

We’ll be staying at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth... the site of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s 1969 “Bed-In” for peace, but what really drew me in was its recent $140 million transformation. It is a masterclass in "Residential Design"— shifting from a traditional, stiff hotel to a space that feels like a sophisticated urban hub.

I’m particularly interested in seeing how they’ve balanced that mid-century heritage with a fresh, bright energy. It’s exactly what I look for when vetting ships or hotels: a sense of story and atmosphere, but with the effortless flow that modern luxury demands.

And I’m curious to see if Montreal and Quebec City can deliver that same feeling we chase in Europe: a sense of story, atmosphere, and something just a bit more timeless.

It’s all part of the same idea we’ve been talking about—finding experiences that feel more considered, more immersive, and a little less obvious.
